Winterisation 2011

Have you thought about protecting your boat for winter yet?

If not its time to do so! Last year temperatures plummeted during November so please be organised and protect your investment. It typically costs a few hundred pounds for us to protect your boat over the winter period, a small price to pay considering the average engine costs over £7000 to replace or repair in the event of a cracked block.

If you want us to assist in winterising your boat please download and complete our winterising form here;

> Download winterizing form PDF

Simply fill it in and post it back to us or e-mail it through to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . It takes 5 minutes to complete the form and you can leave all the hassle and hard work to us.

Should you wish to take care of your own winterisation please have a look at the following links for advice from our insurance partners Haven Knox Johnston;

Please dont rely solely on electric engine room heaters to protect your engine. We can't guarantee the electic supply and a small heater is going to make little difference if the temperature drops as low as last winter.

If you are in doubt or need any further advice please contact us on the office number 01904 621021.

Changes to the supply of Red Diesel

The Sulphur Free Gas Oil regulations will come into force on the first of January 2011 bringing the UK inline with the rest of Europe. These new regulations will make it an offence to sell red diesel with a sulphur content of more than 10ppm (current level 1000ppm) for use in inland waterways craft. Having contacted all fuel suppliers in our area it is likely that we will be supplied road fuel with the familiar 'red dye'.

As with todays road diesel, this low sulphur red diesel contains up to 7% FAME (fatty acid methyl ester or bio-diesel). Questions have been raised about the storage and tank life of such diesel as there are concerns that the organic content can promote the growth of 'diesel bug'.

A recommendation that is being widely made is to consider an additive such as 'Fuel Set' which eradicates the bug and moisture content from your engines fuel system. Fuel set is available from our chandlery currently priced at £9.99 for a 250ml bottle that will treat 1000 litres of fuel. It is advisable to contact your engine manufacturer for further advice before adding any additives to your fuel.

Those of you with modern blown air diesel heaters should benefit from improved reliability as many of these systems are designed to run with this type of fuel.
